Kids Sleeping with Chemicals? - Buy Organic Cotton Pajamas

If someone told you that your child was sleeping in a bed of chemicals you would be rightfully horrified. But Kids Pajamas, for the most part, are treated with certain chemicals to make them "fire-retardant". We truly understand the idea behind making all kids pajamas with this in mind, however, there are some alternatives.

The majority of kids pajamas on the market today are made from synthetic materials. The danger with synthetics, nylon and polyester in particular, is that they melt when heated. Thus, the reasoning behind making the pajama fabric or treating pajamas with fire retardant.

The chemicals used for children's pajamas include cholorinated and brominated flame retardants and inorganic flame retardants, such as antimony oxides and phosphate-based compounds. Some of these very chemicals have been linked to impaired thyroid function and damage to the nervous and reproductive systems. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) can accumulate in the body and, unfortunately, we have the highest body burden of PBDEs in the world here in North America.

Regulatory flammability requirements state that children's sleepwear for sizes 9 months to 14 years must either pass specific flammability tests or the pajamas must be tight-fitting.

How can you tell if there are flame retardants woven into your child's pajamas or if they have been treated with retardant? Unless the pajamas come with two specific hangtags "must be snug fitting" and "not flame resistant" they are guaranteed to be chemically treated.

So, as much as your little girl loves those little Princess nightgowns, if you want her to stay chemically free at nightime with "green dreams" ... say no to the nightgowns and find some other darling pajamas. Two good places to find Organic Cotton pajamas are on www.hannaandersson.com (a Swedish company) and www.garnethill.com

Of course, you always have the option to make some cute pajamas from cotton or just buying some cotton longjohns. It's your choice ... but me? I'm choosing the organic cottons!

organic clothes

Yes previously I too would buy pajamas synthetic in nature but for the past 2 years all my kids shopping is mostly organic clothes. The same goes for foam pillow, I choose those that provide head rest comfort.

I wouldn't want my kid

I wouldn't want my kid sleeping with chemicals in their close. We just got a memory foam mattress replacing a really old one and he is actually sleeping better in it.

Shouldn't moms enjoy organic PJs too?

Why should kids be the only ones to enjoy organic PJs?
