Signs and Symptoms of an Ectopic Pregnancy

I seem to be one of those people that have the "out of the usual" experiences. And one would never expect to have an Ectopic pregnancy after their tubes had been tied, but I did. This happened several years after my tubal ligation and neither my Ob/Gyn doctor or the Ultrasound technician figured this to be a possibility, considering my tubal ligation. But after several weeks of pain and then a hysterectomy, it was discovered, when the tests came back, that I had an ectopic pregnancy.

So, whether you think you could be pregnant or not, if you have serious pain do not hesitate to get checked right away. The sooner an ectopic pregnancy is found the better. It can, actually, be a life threatening situation.

Common Chemicals May Delay Pregnancy

According to a report recently published in the online edition of Human Reproduction, chemicals known as perfluorinated chemicals may delay pregnancy. These chemicals are found in food packaging, pesticides, clothing, upholstery, carpets and many personal care products.

Lead researcher of the study, Dr. Jorn Olsen, chairman of the Department of Epidemiology at UCLA's School of Public Health, said that "These widespread chemicals apparently lower the fertility in couples trying to get pregnant." Data was collected from 1,240 women and the reslts showed that the women with the highest levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) took up to 154 percent longer to get pregnant compared with women with the lowest levels of this chemical.

Early Elective C-Sections Produce Complications

It has recently been noted in the New England Journal of Medicine that babies who are delivered at 37 weeks versus 39 weeks have double the problems at birth. As long as a mother is not experiencing any problems, an elective C-section delivery should not be scheduled prior to the baby reaching the 39 week mark.

Delivering just two weeks earlier doubles the risk that the baby will have problems, such as trouble breathing, infection and low blood sugar, according to this recent study. The study's lead author, Dr. Alan T.N. Tita, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology and an epidemiologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said "About 36 percent of women are delivered prior to 39 weeks, electively by Caesarean," If more women knew these facts, obviously they would choose a date that is in the 39 + week timeline.

A Cause for Concern: Heavy Metals, Our Kids & Developmental Delays

In 2004, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Institute of Health and Human Services stated that1 in 150 children have an autistic disorder and 1 in 6 children have a developmental or behavioral disorder. These are staggering statistics that should concern every parent, grandparent, doctor, clinician, and public or government official. This equates to a fourfold increase in just a decade.

Doctors Warn of Watering Down Infant Formula - Never Dilute Infant Formula

Health officials and doctors are warning parents about the danger of watering down infant formula, even a little bit. It happens every time the economy ges bad, as parents try to stretch out the formula and save some money.

Too much water can be dangerous, even fatal, for an infant by causing sodium levels in the blood to drop. As a rule, babies under 6 months old should not be given water, but some parents don’t realize that

A Florida mother held a press conference this week warning others after she almost killed her 5-month- old son by adding extra water to his powdered formula in an attempt to stretch her supply of formula. Infant formula is made to provide a specific ratio of nutrients based on following precise mixing instructions. Bu adding extra water nutrients are diluted, putting babies at risk for malnourishment or water intoxication.

You Can Be Pregnant and Still Be the Star of Any Party This Season

We all know that one of the daily dramas of being a woman is, ‘What should I wear?’ And when you’re pregnant, that question can be a tortuous reminder that our body is constantly changing, growing, and doing various unexpected and unmentionable things. However, there are so many great fashions now for moms-to-be, that even in a not-so-little-anymore-black dress you can be fashionable, fabulous, and even comfortable! I know, you’re thinking, I don’t believe you. But it’s true, it can happen.

Healthy Eating During Pregnancy Can Help Curb Child's Fat Cells

It's a no-brainer that eating well during pregnancy is good for both you and your unborn child. Plenty of fresh fruits & vegetables, whole grains and proper vitamins are obvious choices.

What most of us didn't know, that fats eaten by a pregnant mother can adversely affect her child throughout their life, has now come to light through research done in the UK and published recently in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Basically, what it says, in layman terms, is that the more fats you eat during pregnancy (we're talking excess here, of course) will affect a part of the child's brain that increases appetite. This is something that has long-term effects and will influence whether a person fights obesity or not.

Home Births Are Increasing According to Midwives

Midwife. It almost sounds medieval but midwives are truly present-day and they are becoming even more in demand currently. Many women are opting for a home birth and the numbers keep going up. Although this sounds strange to many of us in the U.S., the majority of babies in other parts of the world, including Europe, are delivered at home by a midwife.

Although there are dangers involved, it is important to remember that the mortality rate for infants is much lower in other parts of the world.

It is believed that one of the recent reasons for a marked increase may be due to a DVD that is now available for rental. Titled "The Business of Being Born" it was produced by the actress and former talk show host Ricki Lake.
